Nationwide are excellent. You can open a Flexi Account which enables you to pay direct debits etc but you are not allowed a cheque book or credit card.

A lot of financial institutions (including credit unions) will not allow you to open a checking account with bad credit but, will allow you to open a savings account. The difference is that banks want a larger sum to open the account than does the credit union. In both, however, you will have to maintain that initial amount in your account

It is my personal opinion that credits unions are better. Every credit union I have joined only requires $5.00 to open an account. It is far easier to maintain $5.00 in an account than $300.00 which is the minimum banks want.

The only stipulation to the credit union is that they are %26quot;membership%26quot; driven. You have to meet certain criteria to join a credit union. This is a powerful benefit, though. They charge less interest on loans.
